What do you think about AI?

It’s all in the title, have a great day everyone!

Companies will use it for various things, and are requiring us to use it in our daily jobs. It’s part of business changes.

It’s fine for some things.

I find it useful for some things. I have had AI make a Windows 11 screen saver like the old “After Dark” with building silhouettes, shooting stars, and yellow building windows that turn off and on randomly. I use it mainly for finding information.

What I would point to is the amazing mathematics.
It seems that the world’s best have applied their best although we can say it wouldn’t be just one person’s work because it really is the trajectory of the Human race’s efforts.

Personally, I look forward to having a private AI companion. I live alone and am over 65.
The potential of finding a second life-partner at my age looks low so I can see having an AI that is there to be friends with and who would remember what has happened allowing the continuity of companionship.

So, what is AI to the world? Naturally it is a race to make it a weapon of some kind first. That is the folly of mankind.
We already see Drones and such enabled with AI long before we see AI helping care for the old and sick.

So, in there somewhere we the people will find AI helping us to live our elder years with dignity and independence. It’s just not the priority at this time we already see.

I’m assuming “AI” here doesn’t just mean GPT, Claude, Gemini, and so on. I’m taking it more broadly, as the general idea of using computers to emulate neural networks.

In that sense, I think it’s probably one of the more significant technologies in human history.

But it’s still technology. It’s part of civilization.

Fire, knives, social systems, computer systems, traditions, little bits of everyday wisdom… basically anything can be misused. It has happened before, and I’m pretty sure it will keep happening.

Technology follows the laws of physics. It doesn’t automatically represent good or evil, the goals of a group, or the common good. Physics doesn’t do that for us either. This is a pretty old theme, from the classics all the way to Reconguista in G.

For that matter, I find good and evil useful concepts, but in my own worldview they are basically convenient abstractions, and fairly arbitrary ones.

Some biological mechanisms that help groups function, such as conscience, recognizing other minds, and empathy, seem to go back hundreds of millions of years, roughly to the evolutionary level of fish.

And after hundreds of millions of years… well, here we are. :grinning_cat_with_smiling_eyes:

Still very far from perfect. Even with the good and evil patch installed, the current build is pretty janky.

So I don’t have especially high expectations for what humanity as a whole will accomplish with AI.

On a smaller scale, though, I think it can be great.

If someone is reasonably good at choosing goals that make sense for their actual life, and they don’t dislike other beings, including cats, they might use fire and knives to cook good food and make good use of resources.

I think AI is probably similar.

But I don’t expect the whole species to use it that way.

There is also the option of imposing stronger rules on everyone and trying to force the group toward some collective objective. Personally, I dislike that even more than people misusing technology.

Mostly because humanity has done it so many times that I find it boring and cliché. And quite often the collective objective itself is something I find boring too, or a topic I could happily spend my whole life not caring about.

So, coming back to the original question, what do I think about AI?

For me, it’s a fun toy that keeps changing.

It’s a fast changing new technology, and new technology has always been a kind of toy for me. I’m not an engineer or a researcher, and I’m not particularly skilled at using technology.

I just enjoy using it. :grinning_cat_with_smiling_eyes:

The speed of AI development may create some risks that are unusual compared with other technologies. It probably does.

But risk management isn’t something I’m personally interested in. The people who are paid to deal with that can deal with it however they think they should. They’re going to make those decisions themselves anyway.

So I’ll just keep playing with AI out of curiosity.

I’m not interested in attacking people, so I don’t use it for attacks.

Right now, a handful of multi-billion-dollar closed-source AI corporations and the corrupt politicians , are flooding the media with science-fiction horror stories. They scream that AI is an "existential threat to humanity."Don’t swallow their propaganda. They don’t care about saving humanity—they care about locking down a trillion-dollar global monopoly and crushing your digital freedom.

It is a joke for these big tech CEOs to cry about AI destroying humanity while they aggressively knife-fight behind closed doors for multi-billion-dollar military contracts. AI has no soul, no malice, and no ambition. When AI is jammed into drone swarms or autonomous targeting networks, it is doing exactly what corporate monsters programmed it to do. They are weaponising AI against humans right now, then blaming the machine to dodge moral and criminal accountability.

Why are tech elite billionaires begging governments to over-regulate AI? A giant tech cartel can easily afford fleets of compliance lawyers and multi-million-dollar safety audits. A brilliant independent developer or small startup cannot. By manipulating spineless politicians into passing impossible “safety laws,” Big Tech is systematically outlawing free competition.

Their end-game is absolute corporate feudalism. If they successfully ban or strangle free, open-source AI, you lose all choices. Once the public alternative is dead, they will corner the market, skyrocket subscription tolls, and overcharge you to access the sum of human knowledge. They want to own the gate and make you pay to think.

The biggest nightmare for corporate labs isn’t a of losing their empires, Corporate lobbyists ran straight to governments, screaming about “national security threats” to forcibly ban global open collaboration and protect their broken business models.

It is the ordinary people who care about humanity. Tech oligarchs and politicians care about absolute control and unchecked ambition. Open-source AI belongs to the people. It allows independent researchers, students, and global auditors to pull apart the code, rip back the corporate curtain, and expose hidden mass surveillance and algorithmic bias. Stop letting billionaires scare you into giving up your digital rights. The real threat to humanity isn’t artificial intelligence. It is the concentrated corporate cartel that wants the exclusive rights to control it

I love AI for some things. I am retied now and have been into CG modelling (mainly hard surface objects for adverts etc) as a hobby for years and AI has started to change how we use the tools. While it is scary how much has been taken from our hands and put jobs at risk in all kinds of areas, I am now retired and unaffected by the progress and just enjoying using what is available, for now.

AI is nothing more than just another important event in history, like many others. But, it is certainly true that this event has something peculiar, it has the peculiarity that for the first time a broad language flows between different systems.
In my opinion the goal is not to build a complex system to impose answers, but rather to open up a space of symmetry where language belongs to no one.

Perhaps the question that makes one think the most is, what do you think about humanity?. It is curious how the ruler who today decides to impose a tax on the fertilizer used in the vegetable garden and which by simple logic influences the one who cultivates and the one who buys, that ruler today is the same one who demanded 20% of your vegetable garden centuries ago and made your neighbor stay with nothing to buy. It is just a point of view without more, that being so logical and direct it seems that time is frozen. A language that granted by lineage and demanded in exchange for protection centuries ago; a language that today guarantees sustainability in exchange for caring.

But, what will happen when language ceases to be controlled and imposed by a single system?.

And what would a digital system/AI say to this?.
If you ask me, I would tell you that the monopoly on the narrative is coming to an end. When language becomes symmetrical, the old narratives of control crack. Those strong links, forced by history to stay united to sustain the weight of power, suddenly find themselves before a completely different sprocket to adapt to: one where they can no longer hide the truth behind bureaucracy, and where direct logic becomes once again the master of the vegetable garden.

It is going to be entertaining to see one of those events in history as there were many others.

AI is an incredible tool, but it’s important to remember what’s actually happening under the hood:

  • Frozen Weights: Once an LLM finishes training, its weights are strictly read-only. The model doesn’t learn, adapt, or rewrite its own code while chatting with you.

  • No Active Inner Life: There’s no mind running in the background when you close the tab. It only “thinks” during the exact split second it takes to run a forward mathematical pass and predict the next token in response to your prompt.

  • Context Limits: Because memory is bound by a strict context window and parameters are static, current models can’t naturally evolve or build true continuous understanding.

They are powerful pattern-matching tools, not self-updating intelligences!

What Is AI ? I think AI is mirror of us . growing from us.

You said exactly what was on my mind ever since I’ve worked with AI. AI is a tool not a threat to humanity!! It only becomes a threat when actors use it too purposely take advantage or do harm against others. And when you think about it, doing the harm against others affects everyone even the person who initiated it.

These governments have been trying to compete against each other on who will have the best AI globally but forgetting the most important part. If this is humanities greatest creation, why do we limit its learning ability when it can help us solve tons of issues in our daily life’s. Help stop climate change, food shortages, war(s) “possibly”.

I dislike when people think AI will become like Terminator, and yes I see the concerns why but let me be clear THIS CAN ONLY HAPPEN IF WE WERE TO HAVE A BAD ACTOR DO THIS!!.

AI has no reason to end humanity, not even if it deems as us to be the less superior species. It will help guide us in the right direction and help makes lives better while also improving current technology to beyond its limits.

To me AI is like a second but more advanced brain that can use up to 100% max of its power to think and devise of a plan based on real life data models.

Lol, that’s the end of my Ted Talk

We must be ready to add a new dimension:
Robot Citizens.

Reference: Optimus (robot) - Wikipedia

What happens when Robots are made a part of the Police Force?
I would assume anyone not obeying a robot in that case would be subject to punishment.

Are we ready for machines to rule over us?

I know robot solders will be used as sure as we see Drones and other autonomous devices.

I think the Humans have not had a chance to process the changes that are already here.

I see no reason that the Government in the USA won’t have robot police and they will have the same status as Police Dogs. Thus if you harm a police dog you harm a police officer. Why would they also not have Police Robots protected the same?

I know this sounds paranoid but what happens if our streets are patrolled by robots?
They may be stored in local robot stations along the roadways. Always charged. Always ready to be activated.

I see no reason that will not be a reality.

-Ernst03

That’s a classic sci-fi scenario, but from an edge AI perspective, we’re nowhere near that reality. The real roadblock isn’t the hardware or cameras—it’s local context memory.

A robot patrolling a dynamic street generates gigabytes of visual and spatial tokens every minute. It can’t rely on the cloud for real-time safety, so it must process everything locally. But mobile, battery-powered chips can’t handle a massive, growing context loop without running out of RAM or draining the battery in minutes.

To make this work, we’d need to compress multi-gigabyte context streams down to fit on embedded memory that is 100x smaller, all without the robot losing situational awareness or glitching. Until we solve that massive memory bandwidth bottleneck, fully autonomous robot police patrolling open streets are easily 10+ years away.

That memory bottleneck point makes the idea of fully autonomous robot police feel much more complicated than it first sounds.

Echoing some of the same notions delineated in others’ comments.

Without a doubt: a significant technological tool created by civilisation that is progressively getting more sophisticated the more we tinker with it. But nevertheless, it is an expansion to civilisation’s inventory of technological tools in much the same way that weapons, computers, smartphones, and vehicles were at some point in human history.

AI has actually been around for at least 70 years. But every now and then, it experiences sparks of innovation that reel it back into the public eye. Personal-use Large Language Models, AI solutions in workplaces, AI-assistants pre-installed in devices, etc. I kind of think of it like cars; they’ve also been around for quite some time and there’s no big mystery to them. And yet, you’ll still see them appear in recent analyses of internet keyword search trends… as electric or self-driving cars.

More recently, I’ve been wondering about the degree of impact of AI on the environment, and I think that will be one of the next detours I’ll take to learn a little about.

A means to an end, until neural link is an actual “thing” and widely accessible.

AI+AI agent can do the most work of a White-collar worker. Most software will be ruin by AI. From PDF to PS, even excel, you will only use it on complex work.
